Truth & Reconciliation: Beyond Orange Shirt Day

Truth and Reconciliation education is more than wearing orange, learning about residential schools, or participating in activities on September 30. This workshop invites educators to consider what it means to meaningfully engage with Truth and Reconciliation throughout the year. 

Drawing on Indigenous perspectives, lived experience, education, and the Calls to Action, participants will explore the history and ongoing impacts of residential schools, the significance of Orange Shirt Day and the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, and the responsibilities educators carry in creating spaces for truth, learning, and relationship.

Participants will consider how to move beyond performative reconciliation toward meaningful action, relationship-building, and Indigenous-centred learning. The workshop also explores age-appropriate approaches for bringing Truth and Reconciliation into classrooms and learning spaces without placing the responsibility of teaching this work on Indigenous students or colleagues.

Together, we will explore practical ways educators can embed Truth and Reconciliation across the school year through curriculum, literature, land-based learning, language, story, community relationships, and everyday practice.
